I started making Waldorf dolls rather than the calico dolls I was making because the calico dolls were just for decoration and I needed to make something useful not just pretty. How useful is a doll if it can't be used for dolly things like cuddles and play and sharing secrets and having its clothes changed and its hair styled. It needs to listen to stories and inspire stories and just be there, a steadfast companion.
I try to dress my dolls as I dressed my children, clothes that don't interfere with cuddles or play, with running or naps, clothes made of cottons and corduroys and wool. Comfortable. How useful are clothes if they interfere with the life we need to live.
I have been dragging my heels with doll clothes this year. I have the strongest urge to knit everything the dolls will wear but that's not realistic from the the point of view of my time and nor from the dolls' point of view either, a woollen dress on a late summer's day just doesn't make you feel as free as a light cotton sundress don't you agree. I must always remember to dress my dolls as I dressed my children, not too fussy, not too plain, practical and beautiful in their practicality letting the beauty of the child (doll) shine through.
