I have a small but precious collection of Mabel Lucie Attwell Annuals. The annuals were published from the early 1920s to the 1970s and I have seven so you see it is a small collection. I am lucky enough to have the one that was given to my brother when he was born in 1956 and last year I found the 1959 annual, the year I was born. And just last week I finally found a decent copy of the annual from my sister's birth year so that set is complete. It would be fun to find mum and dad's years too but 1927 and 1931 will be tricky to find I think.
I can't say I was a big fan of Attwell as a child. She has grown on me in recent years. I really appreciate the joy and the playfulness in her illustrations. It is what I seek to portray in my own dolls though I haven't always recognised that. It's the same quality that I see in all my favourite illustrators' work. I'll try to remember to share more of my favourites with you again though I know I have shared before, long ago on my old blog.
I also have a Mabel Lucie Attwell biography on its way thanks to the wonder of eBay so I will share my thoughts on that too when it arrives. If you are on Pinterest do a search for this lovely illustrators work, I think you will find it to be charming.
